Portrait Painting - Feathers, Star and Sky - Prescott, Arizona

Another one of Patrick Saunders' paintings from a Prescott, Arizona pow wow last summer.

The brightly colored feathers worn by this young man commanded Patrick's attention. His challenge as a painter was to play down the obvious portrait and focus on the beauty of the feathered headdress.

Oil Painters of America 28th Annual National Juried Exhibition

We met this Northern Traditional War Dancer at a pow wow in Prescott, Arizona. 

It was a beautiful day, and the feathers of his headdress connected him to the clouds in the sky. For Patrick Saunders, it's exciting to work on a portrait that combines history, drama and storytelling with the challenges of competing textures and shapes.

We just learned that this painting was accepted into the Oil Painters of America's 28th Annual National Juried Exhibition of Traditional Oils, and will be on display at the Illume Gallery of Fine Art in Saint George, Utah this May.
